Club History

The opening night of the Circle 'W' took place on October 31st 1978. The venue for the birth of what was to become one of the best known Country & Western clubs in the area was an upstairs room at the Wellington Public House, Great Bridge Street, Great Bridge.

Over the years the club, like many others, has had to relocate on numerous occasions for a variety of reasons, it has however always remained fairly close to it's roots in the
Great Bridge
and Tipton area.

In early January 1992 the Club was reformed and the present Committee assumed the everyday running of the club.
The first gig with the new Committee at the helm was held on Saturday January 18th 1992 at the "Brewer and Baker", Upper Church Lane Tipton.

The Club is fully accounted and audited twice per year, and copies of the books are held by the Club Treasurer and Club Secretary. Charitable fundraising is a major activity for the club, and since January 1992 The Circle 'W' has given £58,307.05 to local charities and good causes.

Membership to the Club cost £3.00 per year, for which in return members are given two nights free entrance into the Club plus a free members Christmas Party with a buffet and live music. The membership book for those who wish to join the club is open twice a year during the months of February and August. At present the number paid-up Members is 116.

The Club operates every Saturday, admission is £3.00 adults and £1.00 children. The the doors are open at 7:00pm, and the band is on stage 8:30pm till approximately 11:30pm. The club also hold Fast-Draw competitions, raffle and a Club tote card. Single artists are not booked by the Club at any time, instead duo's, trio's and four and five piece bands from all parts of country are booked to appear on stage. The Club recently brought in award-winning international singer RUDY GRANT from Denver, Colorado U.S.A. In addition, the club is not afraid to give new or little known bands a chance - there are a number of bands on the scene today that played their first ever gig at the Circle 'W'.

The club currently alternates weekly between two venues which are fairly close to each other - the "Ex-Servicemens's Club", South Rd Smethwick B67 7BP, and the Smethwick Cricket Club, Broomfields, Smethwick B67 6BJ. Both venues are within two minutes of either Juction 1, M5 (West Bromwich), or Junction 2, M5 (Oldbury). If you want maps for the two venues, you can download or print them from the Venues page - find the link on the left!
